sulphazalazine side effects? Options

Hi everyone, have been taking mx hydro and celebrex for some time now and just recently my rheummy pue me on an ascending dose of sulph. Now that Ive figured out to take them with a large glass of water, the nausea has lessened. Have been feeling ok but the last couple of days have been desperately tired and feeling quite sixk and dizzy. Question is, do you think this is the sulph or could it be down to stress? I had a right old ding dong with my 19 year old son last night and have woken up this morning feeling really rubbish. NOt so much pain, just as I said sick and dizzy and so tired. Ironically I was only thinking to myself inthe last week how much better things were.

Do you think I could just put this down to a "bad couple of days" or could it be the suplh?

Would welcome any ideas!!

Dear Hather

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. I've been on sulf for over 2 years and never had any problems. I started taking mtx 3 weeks ago and I have felt nauseous and tired for a couple of days afterwards. I assumed that it's due to the mtx getting into my system and my body responding to it. Reading your post though, maybe it's because we're both having to get used to a different mix of drugs? Having said that, I've has a very stressful few weeks due to bereavement, the nurse did warn me that it could affect the RA, and have been feeling generally rough for a while- bloods show that inflammation is higher and I've had a flare the last couple of days.Yesterday I felt dreadful, so maybe your problems could be stress as well. My rheummy tells me it's a big factor.

I hope things setlle down for you soon- look after yourself

Hi Heather,

I used to be on Sulph but stopped it last Aug, I no longer need it. I found it affected my taste, things I could no longer eat including Curries my favorite. Other that that it discolors your urine so if you have to give a sample remember to say your are on Sulph. I had a problem with a rash but was not sure which of the drugs caused it. Had to stop them all and re introduce them again. Then no problem after that, it was maybe the amount in the first place. Good luck , I hope your symptoms settle down. Lorna x Smile

Hi Heather,

I had a go on sulphazalazine some years ago. Unfortunately it wasn't for me ... I had one dose and was sick as a dog so had to stop it immediately.

Having said that, there are a lot of people who get on really well with it so I'd advise you to get in touch with your Rheummy nurse if you don't start feeling any better.

Hi everyone, thanks for the replies. I slept for England yesterday and feel a bit better today. I really do think that its the sulph getting into my system. I'll keep on with it for a while longer and if things dont improve I'll ring the rheummy nurse.

hi heather

i've started taking sulpasalazine and like you i've been very tired/feeling rough

i've also had other 'minor' side effects just as i imncreased it from 1000mg to 1500mg had to reduce back on dr's instructions for 2 weeks and then try again

hope things have improved for you
